Electric Kettle Buying Guide: How to Choose the Right One

A good kettle earns its place on the worktop every single day, so it is worth taking a moment to choose one that actually suits your kitchen and your household. Here is what to think about before you buy, along with the current range available at Emirate.

Capacity: how much water do you actually boil?

If you are making tea or coffee for one or two people, a smaller 1.7L–1.8L kettle will boil faster and use less energy than filling a large one halfway. Larger households, or anyone who regularly boils water for cooking as well as hot drinks, may prefer a bigger capacity such as our 3L model.

Safety features worth checking

Look out for boil-dry protection, which switches the kettle off automatically if it is accidentally turned on without enough water inside, and automatic shut-off once the water has boiled. Overheat protection is another feature worth having, particularly in a busy kitchen where a kettle might get knocked on by mistake.

Finish and material

Stainless steel kettles are durable and fit neatly into most kitchen styles, while glass kettles with an LED light add a bit of visual interest and let you see the water level at a glance. Both are easy to keep clean with regular descaling.

Wattage and boil speed

Higher wattage generally means a faster boil. A 1600W kettle will typically bring water to the boil quicker than a lower-wattage model of the same size, which is useful if you are often waiting on your morning cup.
